I’m Alexis Root, founder of Recovery Kidz, created in 2013 to support children whose parents are in recovery. With a background in addictions work and long-term sobriety myself, my mission is to help children feel seen, valued, and supported during challenging times. By helping parents stay engaged in treatment and involved in their children’s lives—especially through meaningful moments like gift-giving—we build stronger family bonds and boost children’s self-esteem. Recovery Kidz is expanding to provide year-round support because when children and families are supported together, long-term recovery and healing become possible.

My name is Brittany Kerr, and I’ve been proudly involved with Recovery Kidz since 2019. I was first introduced to the organization by Alexis, whom I met years earlier when a family member of mine was attending a local recovery house. What started as a small connection quickly became something deeply meaningful to both me and my children.

What started as a small connection quickly became something deeply meaningful to both me and my children. Each year, we look forward to coming together during the holiday season to help create moments of hope, love, and support for families in recovery. Being part of Recovery Kidz has opened my eyes to the power of community and giving back. It’s become more than just a tradition—it’s a reminder that kindness and compassion can change lives. Watching my kids grow up surrounded by this mission has been one of the greatest blessings. We are truly honored to continue being a part of something that brings so much light to others.

Giving back to the recovery community is deeply personal to me—growing up with a mother who struggled with addiction and witnessing its impact on my family has shaped who I am today. Being part of Recovery Kidz allows me to support children and families facing similar challenges and to help bring hope and healing to their lives. In my full-time role as an insurance branch manager, I bring administrative and organizational experience to the board, contributing to the essential behind-the-scenes work.

My name is Ava and I’m on the Recovery Kidz Board because this work is really close to my heart. I grew up with a mom who struggled with addiction and spent time in treatment getting better, and there were Christmases where I didn’t get presents, not because she didn’t love me, but because she was focused on getting healthy. As a kid, it was hard not to feel forgotten in those moments.
Now, as an adult, I work as a Recovery Advocate with Lookout Society, and I’ve seen both the challenges of addiction and the hope that comes with recovery. Being part of Recovery Kidz is my way of making sure other kids going through similar experiences feel seen, supported, and celebrated.
I want every child to know that their situation doesn’t define their worth and that they deserve joy, especially at Christmas.
